01 · Principles
A record readers can understand
The public page explains the property and the editorial case. Internal research fields are not repackaged as consumer badges.
Identity before opinion
The operating name, address, property type and current status must resolve to one coherent record before editorial review begins.
The whole stay
Accommodation, service, dining, wellbeing, place and operational consistency are read together. A single celebrated feature cannot carry the record.
Present-tense judgement
The 2026 record is maintained against current evidence. Reopening, renovation, management change or material decline can change the published account.
The strongest hotel record is specific about both what is known and what remains outside the claim.
02 · Eligibility
What enters the editorial field
Research begins broadly. Publication follows only when identity, current operation and sufficient evidence support a reader-facing record.
- 01
A current operation
The property must be open, bookable or have a clearly evidenced opening status appropriate to the edition.
- 02
One address, one identity
Renamed properties are reconciled to a continuous record; genuinely separate experiences at one complex remain separate.
- 03
Lodging is central
The principal product must be a hotel, resort, lodge, camp or comparable staffed accommodation experience.
- 04
No inherited standing
Price, brand, collection membership, publicity and previous recognition create no automatic route to a GEM distinction.
03 · Review areas
Eight views of one stay
The framework supports consistent research. It does not create public levels or promise that every internal field will appear on the page.
- 01Verify
Character & sense of place
Whether the experience belongs convincingly to its setting and has an identity beyond decoration.
- 02Verify
Design & stewardship
Architecture, interiors, landscape, usability, craft, care and the condition in which the property is kept.
- 03Verify
Accommodation & privacy
Sleep, comfort, quiet, proportion, light, bathrooms, storage and the guest’s practical command of the room.
- 04Verify
Service & consistency
Recognition, anticipation, accuracy, discretion, pace, request handling and recovery across the journey.
- 05Verify
Dining & social life
Breakfast, restaurants, bars, in-room dining and shared rooms across the full rhythm of a stay.
- 06Verify
Wellbeing & restoration
Rest, spa, movement, water, gardens and the genuine restorative value of the experience.
- 07Verify
Destination relationship
How intelligently the property opens onto its neighbourhood, culture, landscape and reasons for travel.
- 08Verify
Evidence & assurance
The recency, independence and consistency of facts sufficient to sustain what is published.
04 · Controls
What protects the record
Clear evidence rules and a hard separation between editorial and commercial work protect the reader and the property alike.
Editorial sign-off
Research informs the record; the published account is resolved by an editor and written for the reader.
Source discipline
Official material establishes current facts. Independent reporting, direct observation where available and contradiction checks test those claims.
No paid inclusion
Advertising, licensing, partner services, hosted travel and commercial relationships do not guarantee coverage or determine language.
Disclosure
A visit is described as a visit only when it took place. Hosted arrangements material to a story are disclosed.
Corrections
Material factual errors are reviewed against the evidence file and corrected. Editorial disagreement alone is not a factual error.
Product separation
A GEM rating is a category assessment and does not imply a position in The World’s Best 100.
