The evidence informs. Editors decide. The edition preserves the result.

01 · Definition

A destination in its own right

A resort is considered as a complete journey rather than an excellent hotel in a leisure location. Setting matters, but only when the stay gives that setting rhythm, privacy and purpose.

01

Evidence-led

Current facts, source quality, professional reporting, direct experience where available and the historical record create the basis for judgement.

02

Editorial

No formula can decide why one complete hospitality experience matters more than another in a particular edition. Editors own that comparison.

03

Edition-specific

A position is true of its published edition. It is not permanent status and does not carry forward automatically.

The list asks which one hundred resorts make the strongest complete case for a journey in 2026.

02 · Eligibility

What can enter the field

A candidate must sustain the full stay on its own terms. Beauty or remoteness alone is not enough.

  1. 01

    Open and operating

The resort must be welcoming guests during the 2026 eligibility window and offer a stable, bookable experience.

  2. 02

    A complete resort identity

Accommodation, landscape, service and experience must read as one coherent destination rather than a collection of unrelated facilities.

  3. 03

    Journey-worthy distinction

The property must offer a credible reason to travel for the resort itself, whether island, wilderness, desert, mountain, coast or country estate.

  4. 04

    Sufficient current evidence

The record must support a judgement across the complete stay, not only a celebrated villa, view, restaurant or activity.

03 · Comparative criteria

Seven measures of a complete resort

Weighted criteria discipline the comparison. Final positions remain an editorial judgement of the whole experience.

  1. 25%Edition

    Service & guest experience

Consistency, intuition, discretion and the resort’s command of the complete stay.

  2. 15%Edition

    Setting, privacy & access

The rarity of the location, the quality of seclusion and whether the journey enhances rather than excuses the experience.

  3. 15%Edition

    Accommodation, design & place

How architecture, rooms, landscape and local character form one legible resort identity.

  4. 15%Edition

    Experience depth

The range, quality and distinctiveness of what can be lived beyond the room, from reef and wildlife to culture and adventure.

  5. 10%Edition

    Dining & wellbeing

The food, restoration and daily rhythm that make a remote or self-contained stay sustainable over time.

  6. 10%Edition

    Stewardship & community

Credible environmental care, conservation, local benefit and protection of what gives the resort value.

  7. 10%Edition

    Enduring distinction

The originality, authority and continuing relevance that separate a great resort from a fashionable opening.

04 · Ranking process

From field to final order

The complete field is compared across resort forms and landscapes without regional quotas or a preferred model of luxury.

01

Build the resort field

Private islands, wilderness lodges, safari camps, desert retreats, mountain estates, coastal resorts and other journey-led stays enter one global field.

02

Verify the operating record

Identity, access, seasonality, accommodation, leadership and material changes are resolved before comparison.

03

Read the complete stay

Service, privacy, design, dining, wellbeing, experience and stewardship are considered together across current evidence.

04

Compare unlike forms fairly

A safari lodge is not asked to imitate an atoll. Each property is judged by the authority and completeness of the world it creates.

05

Challenge close positions

Editors test whether setting is carrying the experience, whether access is justified and whether distinction survives beyond novelty.

06

Lock the edition

The order and its written rationales are approved as one 2026 editorial record.

05 · Safeguards

What protects the list

Published rules keep discovery broad, evidence disciplined and final judgement outside commercial influence.

01

No public vote

Popularity, social reach and reader voting do not determine the field or the order.

02

No paid route

Advertising, licensing and partner work do not buy a place or improve a position.

03

No borrowed ranking

Other lists and guides may inform discovery. Their positions are never imported or substituted for our judgement.

04

Visits stated accurately

A property is described as visited only where an editor or commissioned contributor made that visit. Research-led assessment is identified on its own terms.

05

Conflicts controlled

Editors and contributors disclose material commercial, employment, investment and personal relationships and recuse where required.

06

Corrections preserved

Factual errors are corrected transparently. A published position changes only where a material publication error invalidated the recorded result.
