How appointment works

Three routes. Three different permissions.

Public nominations never carry ranking weight. Applications are reviewed independently. Only an invited, annually appointed member may submit an official ballot.

    Public nomination

    Readers may supply recent, first-hand research leads. These never carry ranking weight.

  2. 02

    Academy application

    Candidates submit experience, independence and conflicts for a separate eligibility review.

  3. 03

    Official appointment

    Qualified candidates may be appointed for one year and one category, with a confidential ballot reference.

  4. 04

    Official Academy ballot

    Only appointed members submit ballots, with per-place dates, funding and conflict declarations.

Eligibility

Experience matters. Independence is essential.

People we may appoint

  • Established travel and hospitality journalists, editors, broadcasters and independent critics.
  • Travel advisors, curators and concierges with substantial recent, first-hand experience.
  • Relevant academics, designers, cultural specialists and former hospitality professionals.
  • Highly experienced independent travellers able to demonstrate breadth and sound judgement.

Conflicts that prevent participation

  • Owners, employees and representatives cannot contribute in the category in which they work.
  • No member may nominate an employer, owner, client, close relation or venue in which they hold a financial interest.
  • Payment, gifts, coordinated submissions and commercial instructions are prohibited.
  • Hotels, restaurants and bars cannot apply for or purchase a position in any ranking.

Annual and confidential

No appointment renews automatically.

Membership applies to one annual cycle and one category. The contributor pool changes each year, and no member may serve more than two consecutive cycles in the same category.

Member identities and individual submissions are not published. Sponsors, venues, tourism bodies and commercial partners cannot appoint members, see individual nominations or direct the result.

The public editorial record remains separate.

The Academy will remain confidential until a 120–180 member cohort, clear regional coverage and independent procedure review are complete.
